O Óscar ó mellor filme é un dos premios entregados anualmente pola Academia das Artes e das Ciencias Cinematográficas ós produtores cinematográficos da industria, e está considerado como o premio máis importante dos Óscar, xa que representa a dirección, a actuación, a música, a edición e tódolos outros esforzos postos nun único filme.

Historia

Cambio de nome na categoría

Na cerimonia da 1ª edición dos Óscar entregáronse dous premios que se consideraron o principal da noite: Outstanding Picture ("Filme destacado") e Unique and Artistic Picture ("Filme único e artístico"), o primeiro gañado polo filme bélico Wings e o segundo polo filme artístico Sunrise. Cada premio intentaba honrar aspectos diferentes e igualmente importantes do cinema.

O ano seguinte, a Academia suprimiu o premio Unique and Artistic Picture e decidiu retroactivamente que o premio gañado por Wings era o máis importante.[1] Aínda que o premio mantivo o nome Outstanding Picture na seguinte cerimonia, o nome sufriu varios cambios ao longo da historia:[2]

  • 1927/28–1928/29: Academy Award for Outstanding Picture
  • 1929/30–1940: Academy Award for Outstanding Production
  • 1941–1943: Academy Award for Outstanding Motion Picture
  • 1944–1961: Academy Award for Best Motion Picture
  • Dende 1962: Academy Award for Best Picture

Ata 1950, o premio outorgábase a un representante da produtora. Ese ano cambiouse o protocolo para que o premio se entregase a todos os produtores acreditados. A regra foi modificada en 1999 para establecer un límite de tres produtores despois de que cinco produtores de Shakespeare in Love recibisen o premio.[3][4][5] A Academia pode facer excepcións, como cando Anthony Minghella e Sydney Pollack foron nomeados postumamente entre os catro produtores candidatos por The Reader.[6]

Unha controversia co premio é a falta de consideración para os filmes en linguas diferente ao inglés. So trece filmes noutras linguas foron candidatos na categoría: La Grande illusion (francés, 1938); Z (francés, 1969); Utvandrarna (sueco, 1972); Viskningar och rop (sueco, 1973); Il postino (italiano/castelán, 1995); La vita è bella (italiano, 1998); Wò hǔ cáng lóng (mandarín, 2000); Cartas de Iwo Jima (xaponés, 2006); Amour (francés, 2012); Roma (castelán/mixteco, 2018); Gisaengchung (coreano, 2019);[9] Minari (coreano, 2020)[9] e Doraibu mai kā (xaponés e outras linguas, 2021). Na 92ª edición dos Óscar, Gisaengchung converteuse no primeiro filme en lingua non inglesa en gañar o Óscar ao mellor filme.[10]

Só dez filmes financiados completamente fóra dos Estados Unidos gañaron o premio, oito deles financiados totalmente ou en parte polo Reino Unido: Hamlet (1948), Tom Jones (1963), Un home para a eternidade (1966), Chariots of Fire (1981), Gandhi (1982), O derradeiro emperador (1987), Slumdog Millionaire (2008) e The King's Speech (2010). O noveno filme, The Artist (2011), foi producido por Francia e o décimo, Gisaengchung (2019), por Corea do Sur.[11]

Outro punto de análise é que os filmes de xénero case non recibiron candidaturas ou premios. Só tres filmes animados foron candidatos (Beauty and the Beast (1991), Up (2009) e Toy Story 3 (2010)), os dous últimos despois de que a Academia aumentase o número de candidatos, e ningún gañou. Tampouco gañou ningún filme de superheroes ou baseado en bandas deseñadas, e só dous foron candidatos, Black Panther (2018) e Joker (2019); gañaron dous filmes de fantasía, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) e The Shape of Water (2017). O silencio dos cordeiros (1991) é o único filme de terror en gañar o Óscar, e só outros cinco foron candidatos: O exorcista (1973), Tiburón (1975), O sexto sentido (1999), Black Swan (2010) e Déixame saír (2017). Ningún documental foi candidato ao mellor filme, aínda que Chang foi candidatao na categoría "Produción Única e Artística" nos premios de 1927/28.
