O Oscar ó mellor guión orixinal outórgase ós escritores que conseguen unha boa historia sen utilizar materiais alleos ou anteriores (libros, obras de teatro, outras películas...). Este Oscar, que se entrega en paralelo a un ó mellor guión adaptado, concedeuse xa na primeira cerimonia de entrega, cando se premiou ás películas de 1927-28. Os dous anos seguintes entregouse unicamente un premio xenérico ó mellor guión, para volver ó formato inicial entre 1931 e 1934. Despois, diferenciouse entre un premio para o mellor argumento e outro para o mellor guión, sen diferenciar entre orixinal e adaptado. Entre 1940 e 1947 volveuse a entregar premios diferenciados para os guións orixinais e para os adaptados. En 1948 non se entregou este trofeo.
