William Henry Pratt , nado en Londres (Inglaterra ) o 23 de novembro de 1887 e finado en Midhurst (Sussex ) o 2 de febreiro de 1969 foi un actor británico coñecido como Boris Karloff . Está considerado un dos grandes actores clásicos do cinema de terror, xunto con Béla Lugosi e Lon Chaney Jr. .
Caracterizado como o Monstro, no tráiler de Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Fillo de Edward John Pratt Jr. e a súa terceira muller Eliza Sarah Millard, naceu en Camberwell , Londres , e creceu en Enfield . Orfo na súa mocidade, asistiu a clases na Enfield Grammar School antes de trasladarse á Uppingham School, a Merchant Taylor’s School e, de xeito ocasional, á Universidade de Londres . A primeira idea de Karloff era unirse ao servizo diplomático, como o seu irmán Sir John Henry Pratt, que chegou a converterse nun distinguido diplomático. En 1909 Karloff viaxou ao Canadá , onde cambiou o seu nome. Por motivos de saúde non combateu na primeira guerra mundial .
Cando chegou a Hollywood participou en numerosos filmes mudos , antes de aparecer como o monstro de Frankenstein en Frankenstein Béla Lugosi rexeitou o papel. Un ano despois interpretou outra personaxe icónica, Imhotep , en The Mummy
A súa altura e o éxito de Frankenstein encadrárono no xénero de terror, realizando numerosos filmes para a Universal Pictures , se ben participou en filmes doutros xéneros, como A patrulla perdida John Ford en 1934. Karloff interpretou o monstro de Frankenstein dúas veces máis, en Bride of Frankenstein Son of Frankenstein Jack Pierce e o incómodo traxe e os zapatos de plataforma que lle causaron danos no lombo que sufriu o resto da súa vida.
Sobre os escenarios de Broadway estreou en 1941 a obra Arsenic and Old Lace
A pesar dos papeis que o fixeron famoso, Karloff foi coñecido na vida real como un cabaleiro xeneroso, sobre todo coa infancia. Nunca tivo a mal quedar encadrado como actor de filmes de terror, senón que considerou que era unha magnífica oportunidade para demostrar os seus dotes e sempre estivo agradecido por iso.
Finou de pneumonía no King Edward VII Hospital de Midhurst aos 81 anos.
