Samuel Butler, nado o 4 de decembro de 1835 e finado o 18 de xuño de 1902, foi un novelista e crítico inglés, coñecido principalmente pola súa novela satírica utópica Erewhon (1872) e a novela semiautobiográfica The Way of All Flesh (publicada postumamente en 1903 con revisións substanciais, e publicada na súa forma orixinal en 1964 co título Ernest Pontifex or The Way of All Flesh). Ambas as novelas seguiron publicándose despois da súa primeira edición. Noutros estudos Butler examinou a ortodoxia cristiá, o pensamento evolucionista e a arte italiana, e fixo traducións en prosa da Ilíada e a Odisea que aínda se consultan.[1][2]
