Ralph Rexford Bellamy, nado en Chicago (Illinois) o 17 de xuño de 1904 e finado en Santa Monica (California) o 29 de novembro de 1991, foi un actor estadounidense gañador dun Premio Tony e cunha carreira que abrangueu un total de 62 anos. En 1986 recibiu o Óscar Honorífico.

Inicios[editar | editar a fonte]
Bellamy naceu en Chicago, Illinois. Os seus pais eran Lilla Louise Smith, nativa do Canadá, e Charles Rexford Bellamy. Comezou a súa carreira interpretativa no teatro, e en 1927 xa posuía unha compañía teatral. En 1931 debutou no cinema, en que traballou de xeito constante durante toda a década, consolidándose como un hábil actor de carácter. Bellamy recibiu finalmente un papel protagonista en 1936, no filme Straight from the Shoulder.
Carreira[editar | editar a fonte]
Recibiu unha candidatura ao Óscar ao mellor actor secundario polo seu papel en The Awful Truth (1937), protagonizada por Irene Dunne e Cary Grant. Tivo un papel similar, tamén xunto a Grant, en His Girl Friday (1940). Interpretou o detective Ellery Queen en varios títulos na década dos corenta, mais como a súa carreira no cinema non progresaba, volveu ao teatro, onde continuou a traballar nos anos cincuenta. Ben considerado dentro da industria, foi fundador do Sindicato de Actores Estadounidenses e foi o presidente da Actors' Equity Association desde 1952 a 1964.
Bellamy participou habitualmente no programa de televisión To Tell the Truth nos seus inicios. Tamén participou na serie televisiva detectivesca Follow that Man.
En Broadway tivo un dos seus papeis máis coñecidos, o de Franklin Delano Roosevelt en Sunrise at Campobello. Posteriormente traballou na versión cinematográfica de 1960.
No cinema tamén participou en Rosemary's Baby (1968), no papel dun diabólico médico, antes de enfocarse cara á televisión durante os anos setenta.[1] Volveu ao primeiro plano grazas a dúas interpretacións: a da miniserie The Winds of War (1983), na cal novamente fixo o papel de Roosevelt,[1] e pola que conseguiu unha candidatura aos Premios Emmy, e a dun multimillonario na comedia de éxito Trading Places (1983), xunto a Don Ameche e Eddie Murphy.
Anos finais[editar | editar a fonte]
En 1984, recibiu un Life Achievement Award, concedido polo Sindicato de Actores, e en 1987 recibiu o Óscar Honorífico "pola súa mestría única e o seu servizo distinguido á profesión".
Entre os seus últimos papeis tivo unha aparición nun episodio de L.A. Law. Seguiu a traballar regularmente, e a súa última actuación foi en Pretty Woman (1990).
Vida persoal[editar | editar a fonte]
Estivo casado en catro ocasións: con Alice Delbridge (1927-1930), Catherine Willard (1931-1945), e coa organista Ethel Smith (1945-1948),[2] matrimonios que acabaron en divorcio; finalmente, en 1949 casou con Alice Murphy,[3] permanecendo unidos ata o falecemento de Bellamy en 1991 en Santa Monica, por mor dunha doenza pulmonar aos 87 anos. Foi enterrado no cemiterio Forest Lawn Memorial Park dos Ánxeles.[4][5]
Bellamy ten unha estrela no Paseo da Fama de Hollywood, no 6542 de Hollywood Boulevard.
