En 1997, Freeman, xunto a Lori McCreary, fundou a produtora Revelations Entertainment.
Tras catro candidaturas, gañou o Oscar ó mellor actor de reparto, pola súa actuación na película de Clint Eastwood Million Dollar Baby, o 27 de febreiro de 2005, na 77ª edición dos Premios Oscar.
Freeman, desde os seus inicios no cine demostrou un extraordinario talento como actor, conferíndolle aos seus personaxes unha caracterización moi crible dentro do xénero dramático. Famosas son as súas actuacións nos filmes Cadea perpetua e Amizade. A actuación de Freeman brindou ás películas onde participa unha gran solidez e gran consistencia.
