Joel L. Cracraft, nado en 1943, é un ornitólogo e paleontólogo estadounidense, actualmente curador de ornitoloxía do Museo Americano de Historia Natural (American Museum of Natural History, AMNH).

Traxectoria[editar | editar a fonte]

Cracraft estudou na Universidade de Oklahoma (B.S. en 1964), na Universidade do Estado de Luisiana (M.S. en 1966), e recibiu o seu doutoramento (Ph.D) en 1969 na Universidade de Columbia,[1] cunha tese sobre a morfoloxía funcional da locomoción nas aves.

Ademais do seu traballo ensinou no AMNH e tamén na Universidade de Columbia.

É especialista na sistemática das aves. Analizou as relacións das aves do paraíso de Nova Guinea e illas próximas, e as causas da súa diversificación, así como os córvidos e outros paxaros cantores, entre outros, mediante análises do ADN. Outro foco da súa investigación é a conservación das especies.

Nas décadas de 1970 e 1980 emprendeu unha serie de tentativas (polémicas) sobre a sistemática cladística das aves.[2]

Tamén estudou paleo-bioxeografía, os patróns das árbores filoxenéticas, o concepto de especie, a especiación e outras cuestións da teoría da evolución, nas que traballou con Niles Eldredge.

É membro da Asociación Americana para o Progreso da Ciencia e da Unión Americana de Ornitólogos. Foi presidente da Sociedade de Biólogos Sistemáticos.
