A súa fama no cinema comercial arrincou coa película de H. Heard Shadows Run Black (1981), aínda que o seu primeiro papel como protagonista foi en Silverado (1985). Participou despois nunha gran cantidade de películas con éxito comercial; en 1990 debutou como director con Dances with Wolves, coa que gañou sete Óscars.
