Ruby Catherine Stevens, coñecida como Barbara Stanwyck, nada en Nova York o 16 de xullo de 1907 e finada en Santa Monica (California) o 20 de xaneiro de 1990 foi unha actriz estadounidense de cinema e televisión. Candidata catro veces aos Premios Óscar de Hollywood e gañadora finalmente dun honorífico en 1982. É un dos mitos da Sétima Arte e unha das mulleres fatais máis emblemáticas da historia do cinema.

Traxectoria

Nada co nome de Ruby Catherine Stevens, era filla dunha parella de clase traballadora. A súa nai morreu cando Ruby tiña catro anos por complicacións tras un aborto. Dúas semanas despois do funeral o seu pai uniuse a unha compañía que estaba a escavar o canal de Panamá e nunca se soubo del. A encargada de coidar de Ruby e do seu irmán máis novo foi a irmá máis vella, Mildred, que só tiña cinco anos máis ca ela. Cando Mildred conseguiu un traballo como corista, os dous irmáns pasaron por varios fogares de acollida.

En 1916 e 1917 Ruby foi de xira coa súa irmá. A través dos filmes de Pearl White entroulle o gusto pola interpretación. Tras varios traballos, a súa vida artística comezou en 1922 como bailarina do Ziegfeld Follies.

En 1926 foi contratada para a obra teatral The Noose, coa que conseguiu un grande éxito en Broadway. Foi nese momento cando cambiou o seu nome polo de Barbara Stanwyck, Barbara polo nome da súa personaxe na obra e Stanwyck polo apelido dunha compañeira do elenco de actores.

Pouco tempo despois comezou a súa carreira cinematográfica, na que conseguiría grandes éxitos, sendo a actriz mellor pagada en 1944.

Cando a súa carreira comezaba a declinar en 1957 pasou á televisión, medio no que recuperou a popularidade, chegando ata os anos oitenta, en que participou en The Colbys. O seu nome era o inicialmente previsto para o papel de Angela Channing en Falcon Crest, pero rexeitouno e pasou á súa mellor amiga, Jane Wyman.

Tras retirarse, dedicouse especialmente a facer obras de caridade. Finou en 1990.
