The Mountain Goats é unha banda estadounidense formada en Claremont, California, polo cantautor John Darnielle. O grupo está baseado actualmente en Durham, Carolina do Norte. Durante moitos anos o único membro de The Mountain Goats foi Darnielle. Aínda que segue sendo o principal membro do grupo, traballou con distintos colaboradores, como o baixista e vocalista Peter Hughes, o batería Jon Wurster, o multiinstrumentista Matt Douglas, o cantautor Franklin Bruno, a baixista e vocalista Rachel Ware, o cantautor e produtor John Vanderslice, a guitarrista Kaki King, e a multiinstrumentista Annie Clark.[1]
Durante os anos 90, The Mountain Goats foron coñecidos por producir gravacións caseiras lo-fi (destacando o uso da gravadora dun radiocasete) e editalas en casete ou vinilos de 7 polgadas.[2] Dende 2002 The Mountain Goats adoptaron un enfoque máis puído, gravando a miúdo en estudio cunha banda completa.[2][3]
