English: This composite image shows an exoplanet (the red spot on the lower left), orbiting the brown dwarf 2M1207 (centre). 2M1207b is the first exoplanet directly imaged and the first discovered orbiting a brown dwarf. It was imaged the first time by the VLT in 2004. Its planetary identity and characteristics were confirmed after one year of observations in 2005. 2M1207b is a Jupiter-like planet, 5 times more massive than Jupiter. It orbits the brown dwarf at a distance 55& times larger than the Earth to the Sun, nearly twice as far as Neptune is from the Sun. The system 2M1207 lies at a distance of 230 light-years, in the constellation of Hydra. The photo is based on three near-infrared exposures (in the H, K and L wavebands) with the NACO adaptive-optics facility at the 8.2‑m VLT Yepun telescope at the ESO Paranal Observatory.

La photo a été prise pour la première fois en 2004. Son caractère de planète et ses caractéristiques ont été confirmées en 2005 après une année d'observation. 2M1207b est une géante gazeuse cinq fois plus grosse que Jupiter. Elle est deux fois plus éloignée de son étoile que Neptune l'est du soleil. Ce système est à une distance de 230 années-lumière de la terre dans la constellation de l'Hydre. Photo basée sur trois expositions dans l'infrarouge proche (bandes H, K et L) avec le télescope de 8,2 m « Yepun » de l'observatoire de l'ESO sur le Cerro Paranal.

È stato ripreso per la prima volta dal VLT nel 2004. La sua identità e caratteristiche planetarie sono state confermate dopo un anno di osservazioni nel 2005. 2M1207b è un pianeta simile a Giove, 5 volte più massiccio. Orbita attorno alla nana bruna a una distanza 55 volte maggiore della Terra rispetto al Sole, quasi il doppio rispetto a Nettuno rispetto al Sole. Il sistema 2M1207 si trova ad una distanza di 230 anni luce, nella costellazione di Hydra. La foto si basa su tre esposizioni nel vicino infrarosso (nelle bande d'onda H, K e L) con la funzione di it:ottica adattiva it:NaCo sul telescopio Yepun VLT da 8,2 m presso l'it:osservatorio del Paranal dell'ESO.
