O xénero foi descrito en 1821 polo naturalistabritánicoThomas Stamford Raffles, en Trans. Linn. Soc. Lond., 13: 256, que sinalou como especie tipo a Tupaia ferruginea Raffles, 1821, até entón coñecida como Sorex glis Diard, 1820, xa que cando Diard e Duvaucel describiron por primeira vez estra especie en 1820, considerábana como un esciúrido do xénero Sorex.[3].
