English: The Davison's Victory of the Nile Medal 1798 copper gilt medal; 46mm diameter obverse- legend above- REAR-ADMIRAL LORD NELSON of THE NILE; field has illustration of allegorical figure of Peace a standing on rocky shore with an anchor at her feet, she is holding oval medallion with a bust of Lord Nelson and legend- EUROPE'S HOPE AND BRITAIN'S GLORY named on obverse- inside grained band name engraved in cursive script "William Haley" reverse- view of British fleet going into action against the French fleet which lies at anchor in the Bay of Aboukir; legend above- ALMIGHTY GOD HAS BLESSED HIS MAJESTY'S ARMS, and in exergue- VICTORY of THE NILE - AUGUST . 1 . 1798 reverse- names engraved in cursive script- Hy Smith - THESEUS on edge- incuse legend- FROM ALEXR DAVISON, ESQR ST. | Notas | The Davison's Nile Medal 1798 Commissioned by Alexander Davison, designed by CH Kuchler and struck by Matthew Boulton. 500 copper gilt medals were issued to Petty Officers. This medal commemorates an engagement between the French and British fleets at Aboukir Bay on the night of 1st August 1798 which resulted in a victory for the British fleet led by Lord Horatio Nelson. Nelson's prize agent for the campaign, Alexander Davison, had this medal made in Birmingham at his own expense for distribution to the officers and men present at the battle. The medals were designed by Davison and struck by Matthew Boulton. They were issued in gold, silver, copper gilt, copper and 'bronzed' copper. There was no official medal issued until 1848. Note- the poem "The boy stood on the burning deck" relates to the Battle of the Nile. A battle between the British and French fleets during the Napoleonic Wars.
