John Burdon Sanderson Haldane.

John Burdon Sanderson Haldane FRS, nado en Oxford o 5 de novembro de 1892, e finado en Bhubaneswar, na India o 1 de decembro de 1964, foi un xenetista e biólogo evolutivo inglés. Xunto con Ronald Fisher e Sewall Wright, foi un dos fundadores da xenética de poboacións.

Traxectoria

A súa principal contribución consistiu nunha serie de artigos recompilados en A Mathematical Theory of Natural and Artificial Selection e resumidos en The Causis of Evolution (1932). Neses artigos Haldane estudaba dous aspectos fundamentais de cara a matematización da teoría evolutiva: a dirección e as taxas de cambio de frecuencias xénicas e a interacción da selección natural coa mutación e a migración. Non obstante, Haldane admitía diversas causas evolutivas, comoa a saltación e a ortoxénese, independentemente do protagonista da selección natural (Gould 2002, p. 543).

O traballo de Haldane converteuse nunha das principais contribucións á teoría evolutiva sintética ou síntese moderna, que restablece a selección natural como o mecanismo esencial do cambio evolutivo, explicándoo en termos de consecuencias matemáticas da xenética mendeliana.

Haldane desenvolveu tamén o "principio de Haldane", segundo o que afirma que o tamaño dos seres vivos define a complexidade dos seus órganos internos. No ano 1958 foi galardoado pola Sociedade Linneana de Londres coa Medalla Darwin-Wallace.

Pensamento político

Haldane foi marxista militante e membro do Partido Comunista. Tamén participou na Guerra Civil Española.
