En 1992 protagonizou o filme de terror Pet Sematary Two, no papel do sheriff Gus Gilbert. Brown naceu en Urbana, Ohio. A súa nai, Joyce, era directora de orquestra, compositora e pianista, mentres que o seu pai, Bud, foi congresista por Ohio e presidente da xunta directiva da empresa editorial familiar Brown, fundada polo seu avó, o congresista Clarence J. Brown.

Graduouse na St. Albans School, en Washington, D.C., e obtivo unha bolsa para a Universidade Northwestern. Decidiu converterse en actor despois de que un veciño lle dese a coñecer as obras de William Shakespeare.

Brown está casado con Jeanne Johnson desde 1993 e ten tres fillos.
