Text Appearing Before Image:
On Monday, the10th day of May. 1869, a large party wascongregated on Promontory Point, UtahTerritory, gathered from the four quartersof the Union, and, we might say, from thefour quarters of the earth. There weremen from the pine-clad hills of Maine, the rock-bound coast of Massachusetts, the everglades of Florida, the goldenshores of the Pacific slope, from China,Europe, and the wilds of the Americancontinent. There were the lines of blue-clad bovs, with their burnished musketsand glistening bayonets, and over all, inthe bright May sun, floated the gloriousold stars and stripes, an emblem of unity, power and prosperity. They are grave, earnest men, most of them, who are gath-ered here; men who would not leave theirhomes and business and traverse half ortwo-thirds of the continent only on themost urgent necessity, or on an occasion ofgreat national importance, such as theymight never hope to behold again. It was1 to witness such an event, to be present at 134 CKOFUTTS NEW OVERLAND TOURIST
Text Appearing After Image:
AND PACIFIC COAST GUIDE. 185 the consummation of one of the grandestof modern enterprises, that they had gath-ered here. They were here to do honorto the occasion when 1,774 miles of rail-road should be united, binding in one un-broken chain the East and the West.(Sacramento at that time was the westernterminus.) To witness this grand event—to be par-takers in the glorious act—this assemblagehad convened. All around was excite-ment and bustle that morning; men hurry, ing to and fro, grasping their neighbors*hands in hearty greeting, as they pausedto ask or answer hurried questions. Thisis the day of final triumph of the friendsof the road over their croaking opponents, for long ere the sun shall kiss the westernsummits of the gray old monarchs of thedesert, the work will be accomplished, theassemblage dispersed, and quiet reignonce more, broken only by the hoarsescream of the locomotive; and when thelengthening mountain shadows shallsweep across the plain, flecked and mot-tled with
