Ron Crocombe

Ronald Gordon Crocombe, nado o 8 de outubro de 1929 en Auckland e finado o 19 de xuño de 2009 na mesma localidade, foi un historiador neozelandés, especialista no Pacífico Sur.

Ron Crocombe educouse en Piopio no distrito de Waitomo ata que regresou a Auckland para estudar no Otahuhu College, logo realizou estudos superiores por correspondencia e máis tarde rematou os estudos na Universidade de Auckland. Ron viviu en varias illas do Pacífico durante varios anos antes de se converter a comezos da década de 1950 en axente residente en Atiu nas Illas Cook, estudou desenvolvemento económico e psicoloxía cultural na Universidade Vitoria de Wellington e historia na Universidade Nacional Australiana (UNA), defendendo en 1961 a tese "Land tenure in the Cook Islands".

Crocombe viviu en Papua Nova Guinea de 1962 a 1969 como director da unidade de investigación da UNA nese territorio, trasladándose á Universidade do Pacífico Sur en Suva como responsable do Instituto de Estudos do Pacífico durante vinte anos, vivindo entre Suva e Rarotonga, onde tiña a súa familia. Ao se xubilar en 1989 converteuse en profesor emérito. Considérase o pai dos Estudos do Pacífico[1]. Morreu mentres dun ataque ao corazón no Aeroporto de Auckland cando se dispuña para volver á súa casa en Rarotonga. O seu funeral celebrouse no Parlamento das Illas Cook.
