Niles Eldredge

Niles Eldredge, nado en 1943, é un paleontólogo e biólogo evolutivo. Considérase o principal autor da teoría evolutiva dos equilibrios interrompidos.

Estudou na Universidade de Columbia, primeiro filoloxía latina e logo antropoloxía. Nesa época comezou a traballar no Museo Americano de Historia Natural.

Especializouse nos trilobites, concretamente no grupo Phacopidae, que xa estudara Thomas Henry Huxley, grande evolucionista do s. XIX, colaborador de Charles Darwin. Nos seus estudos, observou abruptos períodos de cambio, en realidade rápidos só a escala xeolóxica, que o fixeron reconsidera-lo dogma gradualista dende moi cedo.

En 1972, tres anos despois de doutorarse, presentou un artigo conxuntamente co paleontólogo Stephen Jay Gould titulado: "Punctuated equilibria: an alternative to gradualist evolution" ou "Equilibrios interrompidos: unha alternativa á evolución gradualista". En realidade as súas propostas admiten evolución gradual durante períodos prolongados, pero habería interrupcións onde a evolución se aceleraría máis do agardado pola radiación adaptativa proposta na teoría sintética.
