Methanococcus é un xénero de microorganismos cocoides metanóxenos do dominio das arqueas, pertencentes á familia Methanococcaceae.[1] Son todos mesófilos, excepto a especie termófila M. thermolithotrophicus e a hipertermófila M. jannaschii; estas últimas, finalmente, foron cambiadas de xénero.[2] O xenoma de M. jannaschii foi o primeiro xenoma de arqueas que foi completamente secuenciado, o que revelou a existencia de moitos elementos xenéticos novos similares aos dos eucariotas.[3] Na taxonomía deste xénero houbo moitos cambios e moitas especies foron cambiadas de xénero, outras foron consideradas sinónimas, e a especie tipo orixinal M. mazei foi cambiada de xénero, polo que a nova especie tipo é M. vainielli.
