Fillo de Samuel Nowlin Reeves (xeólogo) e de Patricia Bondo, cuxo apelido de solteira era Taylor. A nai de Reeves é inglesa, mentres que o pai é descendente de ingleses, portugueses, chineses e hawaianos. O nome Keanu é orixinario de Hawai, illa da que provén o seu pai. Significa brisa fresca sobre os outeiros. Tralo abandono do seu pai, e o posterior divorcio do matrimonio, a súa nai mudouse a Canadá, onde medraron Keanu e a súa irmá Kim. Recorreron diversas partes do mundo, como Australia, Nova York e Toronto, tendo varios padrastros. Dende moi novo, Keanu sentiu inclinación polo hockey sobre xeo, ao que se adicou no instituto, onde o alcumaban O muro.
