Bale deuse a coñecer cando foi elixido para o papel protagonista do filme de Steven Spielberg Empire of the Sun (1987) á idade de 13 anos, interpretando un neno inglés ó que separan da súa familia e que se atopa perdido nun campo de internamento xaponés durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desde entón foi o protagonista de diversas películas independentes e grandes superproducións que o fixeron moi popular en todo o mundo, entre a súa filmografía destacan American Psycho, O maquinista, dous filmes do súper-heroe Batman (Batman empeza e O cabaleiro escuro), The Prestige e Terminator Salvation, onde interpreta a John Connor. Destaca pola súa versatilidade, o seu dominio de diferentes acentos da lingua inglesa, e os seus duros réximes alimenticios, o que lle permite gañar ou perder moito peso segundo o papel que teña que interpretar[Cómpre referencia].
